langue française, the AECB will animate an afternoon workshop in Montreal
Friday, January 21, for ANEL members. The French-language workshop,
entitled "Mieux exporter avec l'AELC" (Export Better with the
AECB), will cover the AECB's programs and areas of activity. AECB staff
will discuss, among other things, changes to AECB funding programs for
2005-2006, including tips for publishers on how to streamline their
application process.
For more information, contact ANEL professional development coordinator
Jean-François Hébert (hebert@anel.qc.ca)
at (514) 273-8130, extension 224.
Internet book marketing in France – Workshop offered February 7 in
Montreal
The AECB will hold a one-day workshop on Internet book marketing and
promotion in France, from strategic thinking to practical application, all
illustrated by case studies. Workshop leader Luigi Gropallo has 15 years
of experience as an industry leader and expert on direct sales in France.
He founded Novalis, a direct-mail company specializing in sales of records
and videos (now Alapage.com) and set up and directed the distance selling
arm of Fnac.com, pursuing on an international scale the distribution of
cultural products on the Internet. This event will take place in
French.
The workshop will take place in
Montreal, Monday, February 7, 2005, from 9 am to 4 pm. Watch
your inbox starting next week for the registration form and further
information on this workshop.
Seminar on Internet publicity and marketing set for February 24 in
Toronto
The date of the AECB's seminar on Internet publicity and marketing,
announced last month, has been set for Thursday, February 24, 2005, from 9
am until 4 pm at the Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto. Consultant Steve
O'Keefe, author of The Complete Guide to Internet Publicity, will guide
participants through two sessions on the fundamentals of online promotion
for book publishers and emerging topics in online book marketing. The
morning session will focus on the basic principles and practices for
conducting an online promotional campaign for any and every new title,
including syndicating excerpts to high-traffic web sites and posting
messages to online discussion groups. The afternoon session will focus on
emerging technologies and opportunities for book marketing online,
including establishing an Amazon Marketplace program, keyword and adword
purchasing and management, and promoting through blogs. Both sessions will
conclude with a Q&A period.
Watch your inbox starting next week for the registration form and
further information on this workshop. The registration
deadline is Friday, February 11. This seminar will precede the Association
of Canadian Publishers' PD Seminar on exporting to China and overseas
copyright on Friday, February 25 for those planning to be in Toronto.

Books on Canada 2005 starts world tour
The 2005 edition of Books on Canada, with a record number of titles, is
off the presses and starting its world tour with a mailing to over 5,000
Canadianists in some 30 countries and librarians in the US, France and the
UK. We have added addresses of Quebec Studies programs and professors and
look forward to a positive response to this expanded distribution.
Publishers' copies will be mailed out shortly. As always, we welcome your
comments and feedback about the catalogue and look forward to hearing of
any enquiries that have been generated as a result of your participation.
The collections of frontlist titles and catalogues will be exhibited at
over 30 Canadian Studies conferences this year, starting with Grainau,
Germany, February 25-27. The tentative schedule is online.
Books on Canada 2005 and its accompanying displays are again the result
of coordinated efforts; the AECB wishes to thank Foreign Affairs Canada
for their continued financial support and the International Council for
Canadian Studies for their membership list and coordination of the display
schedule.
Special catalogue for French library market cancelled
After extensive research and consultation with experts in the French
Library markets and publishers in Quebec/Canada, the AECB has decided to
cancel its project to publish and distribute a catalogue targeting
libraries in France and Belgium. It was determined that a collective
catalogue was not the most efficient and cost-effective way of targeting
this niche market. The AECB will pursue its research about the library
market in France and provide further information in a future issue of AECB
News.

London
Book Fair – update
The Canada
stand at the 2005 London Book Fair is now fully booked. A memo outlining
relevant details about the fair, the Canadian collective stand and
shipping details has been sent to publishers who registered with the AECB
For
those publishers exhibiting elsewhere at the fair, we encourage you to
complete the AECB
registration form.
The
December 16 issue of AECB
News provided details about a pied-à-terre
option for publishers who are not exhibiting but want to have a home base
at the fair. To sign up for the pied-à-terre
option or to register for future AECB
LBF mailings, complete
the form on our website.
Bologna
Children’s Book Fair – pied-à-terre
option available
A memo including relevant information on the fair, the Canada collective
stand and shipping details will be sent shortly to publishers who
registered with the AECB.
The AECB
is offering a pied-à-terre
option, which costs $600, to publishers who plan on attending, but not
exhibiting at, the 2005 Bologna Children’s Book Fair. To subscribe to
this option, please contact Sheila
Cormier
(scormier@aecb.org)
and transmit your payment before Friday, March 25, 2005.
In
addition, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair is working with UNESCO –
Clearing House for Literary Translation to create the first world
directory of children’s book translators. This directory is meant to
provide all professionals in children's publishing with a complete and
updated reference tool. The deadline to submit the information is February
25; the first edition of the directory, which will be available for free,
should be launched in April 2005. For a copy of the form, please contact Sheila
Cormier
(scormier@aecb.org).
BookExpo
America – no collective stand this year, AECB still present
There
will be no Canadian collective stand at BookExpo America this year (June
3–5, New York). A number of factors brought the AECB Board to this
decision: the majority of Canadian publishers participating in BEA already
have their ‘address’ at the show (exhibiting on their own or with
their US distributor); branding oneself as a non-US publisher is a
handicap at BEA (except if you are attending exclusively for rights
sales); raising publishers’ participation costs versus running a
deficit, and; the considerable time required by the AECB secretariat to
prepare and send invitations, reminders, etc.
While
not coordinating a collective stand, the AECB will still be present at BEA
with a 200 sq. ft. info desk and meeting space. In order to assist those
publishers attending, but not exhibiting, the AECB is offering a pied-à-terre option at a cost of $500 for publishers who want a
home base at the fair. (Publishers exhibiting on their own or elsewhere at
the fair are still encouraged to complete the
registration form.)
To sign
up for the pied-à-terre option
or to register for the AECB’s
directory, complete
the form on our website.
Tokyo
International Book Fair – invitation coming soon
The
invitation to exhibit on the Canada stand at the 2005 Tokyo International
Book Fair (July 7–10) will be sent soon. The invitation and registration

will be tight.
Frankfurt
Book Fair – invitation coming soon, new director appointed
The
invitation to exhibit on the Canada stand at the 2005 Frankfurt Book Fair
(October 19–23) will be sent shortly. The invitation and registration
forms will also be posted on our website. The deadline to reserve a space

The
Frankfurt Book Fair has appointed a new fair director; Jürgen Boos, 43,
will take over as director of the Frankfurt Book Fair effective April 1,
2005. Boos has a solid background in publishing and the book trade, and
has been Head of Marketing, Sales and Distribution since 1997 at Wiley-VCH
in Weinheim, a subsidiary of John Wiley & Sons, one of the most
important publishing houses world-wide for scientific and professional
literature. Incumbent Director Volker Neumann is to remain in office
parallel to Boos until December 31, 2005.
